Tools You’ll Need
-
Breaker bar or impact gun
-
Flathead screwdriver or airbag release tool
-
Voltmeter or multimeter
-
Wire stripper
-
Electrical tape or heat shrink
-
OBD2 splitter (if another OBD device is installed)
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect the vehicle battery and wait at least 15 minutes before working on the steering wheel.
This allows stored electrical charge to dissipate and reduces the risk of airbag deployment.
Step 2: Remove the Airbag
-
Locate the airbag release points on the back or sides of the steering wheel.
-
Some vehicles use spring clips accessed through holes; others use mounting bolts.
-
Insert a pin or screwdriver until the airbag releases with an audible click.
-
Gently pull the airbag forward — do not pull forcefully.
Disconnect the airbag and horn wiring carefully.
📸 Tip: Take a photo before unplugging connectors to ensure proper reinstallation.
Step 3: Remove the OEM Steering Wheel
-
Ensure the steering wheel is perfectly straight with the wheels aligned.
-
Remove the center steering wheel bolt or nut.
-
Pull the wheel straight outward and guide the wiring through the center opening.
-
If no factory alignment marks exist, mark the steering column.
Step 4: Transfer OEM Components (If Applicable)
Remove and transfer the following components to your CarbonAddons steering wheel:
-
Multifunction buttons
-
Trim pieces
-
Rear casing
-
Paddle shifters
🔁 Core Exchange Note:
If returning your OEM steering wheel for a core exchange, all components must be reinstalled properly. Damaged or incomplete wheels will not be accepted.
Step 5: Install the CarbonAddons Steering Wheel
-
Align the new steering wheel with the steering column.
-
Secure and torque the center bolt or nut.
-
Reconnect all steering wheel wiring harnesses.
Step 6: Wire the LED Display
For best results, use a switched 12V power source (on/off with ignition).
-
Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition ON.
-
Using a voltmeter, locate:
-
A 12V ignition-switched wire
-
A ground wire
-
-
Turn ignition OFF, disconnect the battery, and wait 15 minutes.
-
Strip approximately ¾ inch of insulation from both wires.
-
Splice the RED LED wire into the OEM 12V wire.
-
Splice the BLACK LED ground wire into the OEM ground wire.
-
Secure connections using solder, heat shrink, or electrical tape.
-
Wrap the entire harness and ensure no exposed wires.
👉 Route wiring away from airbag components to avoid interference.
Step 7: Reinstall the Airbag
-
Reconnect the airbag wiring.
-
Press the airbag back into place until an audible click is heard.
-
Reconnect the battery.
Step 8: Connect the OBD Module
Plug the wireless OBD module into your vehicle’s OBD2 port.
If another OBD device is installed, use an OBD splitter to avoid conflicts.
Step 9: Test the Steering Wheel & LED Display
Start the vehicle and verify:
-
LED display powers on
-
Steering wheel buttons function properly
-
LED lighting operates correctly
If the LED display does not turn on automatically, it may be in sleep mode.
Press and hold both LED buttons until the unit powers up. You can do the same thing to manually turn it off while driving.
LED Display Controls
-
Left button: Navigate left / up
-
Right button: Navigate right / down
-
Press & hold RIGHT: Enter menu / confirm
-
Press & hold LEFT: Go back
